I've been asked to put together a list of the 10 best storytelling/folktelling CD's ever for a folk arts newsletter.

Ever?
Wow, that's a tall order. Only one in my collection leaps to the "best ever" category.
Patrick Ball's 1995 CD, Storyteller/Gwilan's Harp and Other Celtic Tales would make my list of all time greats.
Although his skill as a harpist contributes to the overall excellence of the CD, the music is integral to the storytelling. However, were you to remove the music, you'd still have a variety of solid, well-told traditional stories... any of which would be stellar examples of storytelling.

Jackie Torrence, anything by her is wonderful. Whoever is in charge of her estate is IMO missing out on the opportunity to make some money. I, for one, would love to buy more of her tapes and videos. Some of them can't be found. There is no web site for her either. She belongs in the top ten for sure! The Accidental Angel is just one of her's that is great!
Right now I'm listening to a teller with a voice that I just love. I'll have to find the box the library discarded tape came in and the man's name. Here it is, Zlateh The Goat and other stories performed by Theodore Bikel. The tape was a dollar or less and he is just great to listen too!
Another fantastic voice and teller is Carol Russell! I saw her that the National Storytelling Festival this year. It was my first year! It wore me out but was great. I bought her CD for a buddy but now I want it and can find no where online to buy it!
Willy Claflin is another on my wish list. Fortunately I can find him online. We listened to his The Uglified Ducky CD on the way back from the festival and all four of us LOVED it!
I also adore Len Cabral's CD's. They are all on my wish list! My favorite is probably Buzz Buzz There Once Was. He is simply a fantastic and wonderful storyteller!
Carmen Agra Deedy's Growing Up Cuban In Decatur is a wonderful warm CD! That's an accurate description of her as well!

I'm way late on this thread, but here's some of my favorites:
Donald Davis' C-R-A-Z-Y
Syd Lieberman's tape of classic horror stories. So creepy my 16 year-old son would only listen to a few minutes at a time!
JJ Reneaux--that CD with Half-Man and the Fifolette on it
Bil Lepp's Monster Stick--too funny
Mary Hamilton's Ghost stories CD/tape
Jackie Torrence--anything she had!
The Folktellers--I don't know if anything is still in production, but they were great
Heather Forest--don't remember the name, but it was a cassette of stories mixed with ballads
Well, that's seven. To tell the truth, I quit buying or listening to professional storytellers on tape because of the fear I might imitate them in my telling. It's so easy for me to pick up other people's accents and inflections for some reason. _________________ Granny Sue

Thanks everyone. I'll put together the list for a newsletter for Folk muscians who want an introduction to storytellers. There's enough diversity to satisfy most, (never all)
Keep the ideas rolling in and I'll put together a second list.

The Great North is not represented. What about the remarkable Kevin Kling.
1) Stories Off the Shallow End (pick this if you can only have 1)
2) Wonderlure
3) A Fool's Paradise
4) Alive

Theodore Bikel is a talented Austrian baritone singer and actor. I was lucky and saw him live in The Sound of Music though I think he also played Max in the movie. He has a magnificent voice. He's in lots of movies (e.g. The African Queen) & been on Broadway often. My guess is that he's reading. But when recording, many storytellers work with scripts because there is no audience to play with. _________________ Yvonne Healy, storyteller

I know of Bikel as a folk singer and actor, (He was Worf's adopted father in Star Trek Next Gen)but has he also done storytelling?
