I'm fascinated by virtual communities, from Storytell to this forum to MySpace to YouTube.

Randall Munroe of Virginia has invented a fanciful hand-drawn map of online virtual communities, with the geographic area representing the size of that community's membership.

What "countries" have you visited? Where do you "reside" when you're online?
Which countries have you never heard of?
In which ones have you staked out a claim as a storyteller or storytelling resource?
And where on this map is your audience?

What a cute idea!!

I usually wander around in the seas, but occasionally I'm in outer space. One of the places that I occasionally get to tell tales is at science fiction conventions -- it's great fun to do the midnight spooky storytelling! A quiet, intimate room, a few folks for the panel (for one of these sessions the host also offered a scotch tasting. The audience was mellow and in the mood to hear creepy but subtle tales. What fun it was!)

My favorite is the Noob Sea.

Hilarious!

I've staked out a claim in MySpace, LJ, Orkut, Flickr, Last.FM, and Friendster, but I'll all but abandoned Orkut (since I don't speak Portuguese) and Friendster (whose sole recommendation now is that it reminds me when people's birthdays are). Last.FM I've given up on since I don't have time to listen to music, and I'm debating whether ever to return to LJ (Livejournal). I've peeked in at Facebook, and Fark, and just set up an outpost on Del.icio.us.

Somewhere my footprints in Usenet from ten years ago and more are still there (although I no longer know how to find them).

I regularly visit Boing Boing and Wikipedia, and sometimes even contribute, and I enjoy sailing through the blogipelago, although usually only to a few dozen familiar spots in this chain of some 100 million tiny islands.

I'm very interested in making a voyage to Second Life. I wonder who's going to be the first storyteller there.

Actually, there already are several "storytelling" groups in Second Life. I'm thinking we should put together a festival.

See you there!
