I live in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. I am interested in having a storytelling festival here in the next year. The community is mostly retired people from many parts of the country and the world. If anyone has any advice for me I would like to hear from you.

I do have some ideas as I have run large events in the past but storytelling here is something new. My experience during the 10 months I've lived here is that storytelling is dressing up as someone who has been dead awhile and opretending to be them and telling about their life.

I have done a number of storytelling sessions and have found that the audiences love the stories. I do a variety of tales, some of my own and some that i have found or have permission to use.

I am open to advice, suggestions, and just plain talk.

Shoot for a storytelling series and not a festival.

Join the NSN sig for Producers and Organizers, mostly for the listserv option. There are some smart people on that list.

Don't fall into the booking only the stars of storytelling trap. No one knows who these 16 people are 'cept us. Rather, seek out the unique and gifted hundreds out there to be on your stage.

Watch for our Arizona "Emergent Storytelling Series" coming in 2008 where we get to put our money where our mouth is.

That's one type of storytelling. Although I have to say I've been going to storytelling events for 20 years now, in five states, and out of the hundreds of storytellers I've seen only two who dressed up as historical figures. One was Mother Jones, and the other was Hans Christian Andersen (and Andersen wasn't talking about his life he was telling a story).

Go to some festivals. If possible go the the NSN convention in July in St. Louis. See and hear a few live events and connect with Tellers who have created events.
