The San Francisco Fringe Festival is almost here, with its annual assortment of dance, theatre, standup comedy, poetry, multimedia, buffoonery, clowning, puppetry, and performance art. Performers are selected by lottery, so you never know what you'll find. But prices are low (nothing is over $9), shows are short (less than an hour), and the venues are all within walking distance.

Here are some of the storytellers performing at this year's festival:

H.R. Britton,
New York, NY
As a storyteller and spoken word artist, H.R. Britton gravitates
towards the anxiously comic. Alternating between original monologues
and literary adaptations, he has been spinning yarns in New York City
since 1999.

"Jesus Rant (The Religio-Comic Ravings of a Former Christian)"
In his West Coast debut, H.R. Britton comically skewers his
fundamentalist upbringing, rails against religious hypocrisy, and
delicately sketches a portrait of the historical Jesus.

Dona Budd,
Oakland
Dona is an author and life coach. In her autobiographical monologue,
"Terrible Voice," she recounts her childhood as a "strange white
child" in a pre-civil rights South. She's been called "a mix of
William Faulkner, the school smartass, and a voraciously curious
toddler, with a smattering of Mae West."

Steven Henegar
Santa Ana, California
Steven Henegar's casual, friendly performances blend the easy
conversation of his Oklahoma family's storytelling with a decade in
the theater. His wry, understated delivery slides into whimsy and
movement, as he mixes personal and family tales with traditional and
original stories from the Midwest and South.

Steven's show is called "Embarrassment and Death." In these touching
and laugh out loud stories, Steven calls up the everyday and the
fantastic from a Midwestern boyhood, discovering the feelings and
experiences that connect us all.

Tim Ereneta
Berkeley

Although he enjoys telling traditional stories to adults, Tim dives
into his background in improvisational theatre for this show, entitled
"You Go First." Two men enter the stage with no preconceived stories
or games. They will create, in the moment, scenes and stories of
modern life and middle age. Never the same show twice.
